Alonso Breaks Mets RBI Record

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No player in New York Mets franchise history has ever driven in as many runs in one season as Pete Alonso.
With a two-run homer in the fourth inning of Sunday's game at Oakland, Alonso reached 125 RBI, passing the previous mark of 124 set by Hall of Famer Mike Piazza in 1999 and tied by David Wright in 2008. Alonso went on to finish 4-for-5 with five RBI and now sits on a franchise record of 128 runs driven in over the course of a single season.
Alonso's 128 RBI paces the National League by a wide margin, as Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals is the next-closest player at 112. The Tampa, Fla. native enters Monday tied with Aaron Judge for the MLB lead.
Surisingly enough, this is not the first single-season franchise record Alonso has set in New York. By breaking the MLB rookie record with 53 home runs in 2019, Alonso also set the Mets single-season home run record – all in his debut campaign.
Through 153 games this season, Alonso is batting .270/.349/.521 with 39 home runs, 27 doubles, 90 runs scored and five stolen bases. With one more long ball, he would become the only player in franchise history with multiple 40-plus homer seasons. As a result of his stellar campaign, he sports 145 career home runs and 377 RBI as of Sept. 26, 2022.
While starring at Florida from 2014-16, Alonso helped the Gators to back-to-back College World Series appearances in 2015 and 2016. He was named a First Team All-American and Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist in 2016 after hitting .374/.469/.659 with 14 homers and 60 RBI.
Alonso finished with a .316/.407/.517 career batting line accompanied by 23 home runs, four triples, 34 doubles, 124 RBI, 102 runs and three steals in 157 games. He was selected by the Mets with the 64th overall pick in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft and was named the NL Rookie of the Year in 2019.
