GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gators' linebacker Derek Wingo has been announced as a member of the Southeastern Conference Community service team for the sport of football as announced by the league office Wednesday at noon.
The SEC names a Community Service team for each of its 21-league sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts.
Wingo, who was a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, is being recognized for his work on both GatorMade trips as well as his work in the Gainesville community with various organizations.
Provided below are the specific community service efforts that earned Wingo a spot on the team.
Wingo participated in both GatorMade trips, which served as an opportunity to conduct community service outside of the United States. The trip to Greece in 2022 included 40 hours of service as members of the football team partnered with the non-profit organization Smile of the Child that helps orphaned youth in Athens, Greece.
