GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Gators head coach Billy Napier, after a weekend to review his team's 24-11 loss at Utah in the season opener, met with reporters on Monday afternoon.
Napier addressed the media with UF Athletic Director Scott Stricklin among those in attendance. He got straight to the point.
"Obviously very disappointed with the performance of our team," Napier opened. "I think the lesson here is that execution wins. I think having the discipline to execute in the moment is something that this game requires. There's no question that we can help our players by coaching better, and certainly we can play better at times."
The Gators have an opportunity to do that on Saturday when McNeese visits Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the home opener. Florida has won an NCAA-best 33 consecutive home openers. The Gators seek to rebound from a lackluster performance at Utah that included nine penalties, five sacks allowed and only 13 yards rushing.
Napier took ownership of the team's struggles at Utah to open his second season at UF.
"You have to get consumed with your process,'' Napier said. "All parts of the organization: 'What can I do that can affect the outcome and get really good at my job?' Essentially just do your job, right? Take responsibility, take ownership. Certainly that starts with me."
