Meet the Gators: Jackson Barberi
Tuesday, December 17, 2024 | Baseball
Ready to shine on the mound for the 2024 Meet the Gators series is freshman right-hander Jackson Barberi. Hailing from Snellville, Ga., the Brookwood High School product has big shoes to fill in jersey No. 22 for the Orange & Blue.
As Florida's highest-ranked incoming recruit to reach campus this past cycle, Barberi was Perfect Game's No. 49 overall player in the country while coming in as the No. 3 recruit and No. 1 right-handed pitcher in Georgia. Gator Nation already had an opportunity to see Barberi in action on Nov. 1 vs. JU in Jacksonville, when he tossed the third inning of Florida's 7-6 walk-off victory over the Dolphins.
Lettering under Head Coach Robby Gilbert at Brookwood, Barberi delivered a dominant 8-1 record as a senior as the Broncos went 29-12 to improve to 48-24 across his final two years of school. The electric righty really emerged as a top prep arm in the country across his 10 appearances last season, finishing with a dominant 0.68 ERA and .151 batting average against.
Barberi fanned 74 batters against just 21 walks across 51 2/3 innings in his ultimate campaign, translating to 12.9 strikeouts per nine and 3.6 walks per nine. He allowed just 28 hits – all singles – equating to just 4.9 hits per nine.
Seeing action in 32 games as a position player from 2023-24, Barberi wrapped up his Brookwood career as a .265/.422/.388 hitter over 64 plate appearances. He tallied one homer, three doubles and 17 RBI.
Having also suited up for 5 Star ATL Mafia as a prepster, Barberi was named to a whopping 28 all-tournament teams at PG events from 2019-23. In each of his final two high school seasons, he was honored as a PG Preseason All-Region member culminating with a First Team nod in 2024.
As one of the younger players in his class, Barberi was still 17 years old during the 2024 MLB Draft. Despite being ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 99 overall prospect for last year's draft, Barberi went undrafted due to his strong commitment to Florida and will be eligible again in 2027.
