Tuesday, December 31, 2024 | Baseball
The call to the pen has been made for sophomore southpaw Mason Laurito, as the Gulf Coast State College transfer trots in for his turn in the 2024 Meet the Gators series. Hailing from Ocala, Fla. as a Forest High School graduate, Laurito will wear No. 38 in Orange & Blue.
As a true freshman at Gulf Coast last season, Laurito made 11 starts and posted a 2-1 record. The left-hander finished with a 3.34 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and .193 batting average against. Sitting down hitters to the tune of an 11.7 K/9, Laurito fanned 42 batters in just 32 1/3 innings.
Reverting back to his prep years, Laurito was a three-time letterwinner at Forest under Head Coach Coy Phillips. Making 23 career appearances, he went 5-3 backed by a .208 BAA and 11.9 K/9 across 54 2/3 frames.
Laurito also laced up the spikes for USA Prime Coastal and Southern Squeeze during his high school days. While playing for the former in 2023, he won the WWBA East Coast Qualifier Championship and was named to the all-tournament team at the WWBA Florida Qualifier with the latter.
Entering college, Laurito was ranked by Perfect Game as the No. 23 left-handed pitcher and No. 226 player in Florida on top of being tabbed as the No. 194 southpaw in the country. Perfect Game named him Preseason Honorable Mention All-Region in consecutive years from 2022-23.
