Carter's Corner: Checking in From SEC Media Days
Wednesday, July 17, 2024 | Football, Scott Carter
DALLAS — I forgot my cowboy hat and boots at home, but I did have a brisket sandwich after arriving here last night for the kickoff before the real kickoff: Southeastern Conference Football Media Days.
The league's signature offseason event makes a visit to Texas for the first time with the addition of the Longhorns and longtime rival Oklahoma into the SEC. The Gators are paired with the Longhorns in the Wednesday afternoon session. Florida coach Billy Napier, quarterback Graham Mertz, running back Montrell Johnson Jr. and linebacker Shemar James are representing the Gators.

Alabama and Mississippi State are making the rounds in the early session. You can watch all-day coverage of the event on the SEC Network if you need to take a break from work.
As for the Gators, the major storyline entering Napier's third season is how will they navigate the nation's most difficult schedule coming off a 5-7 season. Florida opens the season Aug. 31 at home against Miami.
Check me out on Twitter @GatorsScott for real-time updates and FloridaGators.com for coverage later in the day.
Meanwhile, the Gators' contingent is set to depart Gainesville later this morning for a full day of what is now known in the college football lexicon as "talking season."
To get you in the mood, here are a few links of note covering the Gators and SEC Media Days:
— Gainesville Sun columnist David Whitley writes about tone around Napier and Gators heading into SEC Media Days.
— How will the SEC determine tiebreakers for the SEC Championship Game? Here is what we know from Seth Emerson of The Athletic.
— Nick de la Torre of On3.com checks off five questions Napier will be asked at the event.
— Former Alabama coach Nick Saban, serving as a SEC Network analyst at the event, made a candid observation about Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and his ability as a play-caller writes Joey Hickey of Athlon Sports.
— Georgia made a stop here on Tuesday and of course former Gators running back Trevor Etienne was a hot topic. Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel wrote about what the Bulldogs had to say about Etienne, who spent his first two seasons at UF.
