Proverbs 3:6 says, "In all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight". The Gators Will Richard has been on a straight and narrow path for many years---and it led him directly to the Florida Gator Basketball program.
This Biblical quote has guided Richard in his life decisions, and Monday afternoon Florida's head basketball coach Todd Golden presented Will with the Lt. Fred Koss Award. This award recognizes a player who exemplifies the ideals of a team leader during his Florida career. For Richard, it comes as second nature to a young man who puts others first and leads by example.
"Will has impacted Florida Basketball in many ways since the first day he arrived on our campus," said Golden. "His passion for being a Gator and for our program has been a huge part of building our fantastic culture both on and off the court. He is a young man who leads by example and exemplifies the ideals of the Lt. Fred Koss Award."
Richard has enjoyed some significant basketball moments in his career. He averaged double figures in scoring each of his four seasons, while shooting 46.5 percent from the field and gathering five rebounds a game. He had a career high 30 points against Georgia in February and has scored 20 or more points 14 times in his Florida career.
Two weeks ago, after scoring 25 points in a game against Texas A&M, he moved past Gator All Americans Joakim Noah and Al Horford, scoring his 1,135th career point. For Richard, however, what was meaningful was that the Gators won. He went on to say, "I'd rather score zero and win. I'm here to win!"
On the court, Will personifies that ideal---making key plays in the critical stages of games. By taking a charge, making a steal, or gathering a loose ball rebound, Will has an uncanny way of stabilizing the Gator team in the game's important moments. On January 22, in a road game at South Carolina with 4.5 seconds to play, he made the game-winning shot as Florida overcame a 14-point deficit for a crucial Southeastern Conference road win.
Will grew up in a loving family. The Richard family is built around his mother Helen and father Al, along with his sister Sara and brother Al Jr. They are bonded through a personal faith which guides their family's life.
When he isn't practicing or studying, Will is volunteering in the community. You might find him assisting in a classroom at the Fort Clark Middle School or working with the Food for Kids backpack program. This year, he and his teammates joined together to make three-pointers to raise money for the Alachua County School system. Will Richard puts the needs of others at the forefront of his life. He recently told a group of high school students, "Success isn't random, it is built daily through intentional decisions."
Will Richard personifies the ideals of a college student athlete. He will graduate this spring with a bachelor's degree in Sports Management and---along with 48 other former Gator basketball players over the past 51 years---as the latest recipient of the distinguished Lt. Fred Koss Award.
