Joe Mastro was born and raised in Miami, Florida and graduated from Coral Gables High. He graduated from The University of Florida in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Commission from ROTC. He completed his first combat tour in 1967 on a US Navy ship as a CIC Officer before returning to San Diego, Calif and retrained on Swift Boats (PCF) Patrol Craft Fast. He returned to Vietnam in 1968 and commanded PCF-79. After serving for five years, he completed his pilot’s license and received an Airline Transport Pilots license. He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as a Air Carrier Inspector Pilot before retiring after 25 years. During this time he remained in the Naval Reserve and retired as a Commander in 2005.
