Content Tutorial Program
The Hawkins Center Content Tutorial Program has provided tutoring services since its creation in 1980. The program consist of over 150+ content tutors on staff covering over 200 subjects including the GRE, with the goal of providing individualized sessions to any all subjects requested. Other areas of services can also be offered in the form of walk in tutoring labs for writing, sciences and math courses.
Content Tutoring
The Content Tutorial Program offers a variety of options of content tutoring services to meet all of our students’ needs. Content tutors focus on communicating course information, reviewing concepts and preparing for quizzes, exams and assignments. The program offers one-on-one and small group tutoring and walk-in day and night labs. The program has found that small group tutoring is an excellent alternative to one-on-one sessions as it encourages interactive learning among their peers. Small day labs have been successful because they allow students to maximize their time by completing assignments during the day and not having to wait until evening to get assistance. Additionally, night labs allow students to ask questions for specific assignments, and/or upcoming exams and receive immediate help on general subjects such as STEM, Writing/Humanities & Business-related areas without needing to meet with an individual tutor. The tutorial program typically offers between 10-12 walk-in labs each semester. Lastly, it offers GoBoard which is an online program that allows tutors and students to meet in a secure virtual environment for one-on-one tutoring sessions. This is especially helpful for students to connect with a tutor while they are traveling for their sport.
Academic Transition Program
The Academic Transition Program (ATP) provides supplemental instruction to first and second year student athletes admitted to UF through alternative admission who are members of the Promise Program. The objective of the program is to facilitate an effective academic transition for Promise student athletes from high school to the university setting. In the program, students will work with tutors to learn effective study and organizational skills that they will be able to utilize through their tenure at the University of Florida. With the consent of the instructor, tutors will also attend the lectures in assigned courses. This will allow the tutors to monitor attendance, build rapport and a direct line of communication with the instructor. The program's experience has been that this “tutor-instructor” partnership is an excellent means of providing the critical bridging support for this particular student population.
GRE PREP
Continuing education is a source of passion for both the University of Florida as a whole and the University Athletic Association. Student-athletes have opportunities to graduate on time or early since so many courses are offered both online and over the summer. GRE Prep has found that students are finishing their degrees ahead of schedule and are motivated to continue their education while competing in their sport. UF provides many opportunities for continuing education that cater to the needs of student-athletes with remaining eligibility. As graduate school requests have increased over the past few years, the program has responded to this demand and have implemented a new area of our program to cater to this increased need. For the past four years we have created a new partnership with the Princeton Review. As part of the GRE Prep program arrangement, all students enrolled in the test preparation course meets with an instructor two hours each week and receive online access to practice tests and materials such as flash cards and textbook. Students who are admitted to the prep course must complete an application and if selected a contract before admittance to the class. At the conclusion of the course, students who have zero unexcused absences have an opportunity for funding for one exam.
