Mike Holloway is the Head Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Coach at the University of Florida.
He was named the first head coach of the combined men’s and women’s track and field program on June 19, 2007 following five seasons as the men’s track and field head coach.
Holloway enters his 22nd season as the men’s head coach and 17
th season as the women’s coach in 2024.
Over the course of his time in Gainesville, Holloway has transformed the Florida track and field program into one of the most consistently productive teams in the entire country.
He has won 13 NCAA Championships with Florida, his most recent coming in June of 2023 when the Gators won the NCAA Men’s Outdoor Championships.
The Gators swept the team titles in 2022 outdoor season, the first team to do since Oregon in 2015.
Florida’s women completed the sweep of the team titles with the men adding one giving the Gators 3-of-4 titles in the 2022 calendar year.
Only two other programs, LSU and Oregon, have accomplished that feat.
Of the 40 contested Men’s NCAA Championships during his 21 years at the helm, the Gators have finished in the top-5 on 30 different occasions.
He has won the Men’s National Championship over 25 percent (11/41) of the time it has been contested in the past 21 years.
In addition to the 11 NCAA Championships that Holloway and the Florida men’s team have won since 2010 – five more than any other Division I program during that span – the Gators boast 14 runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championships during his head coaching tenure.
Holloway is one of six coaches in Division I history to win at least ten NCAA Track and Field Team Championships. He is also just one of four to win at least six since 1980 and is one of four in history (along with Ted Banks, John McDonnell and Robert Johnson) to win at least four titles both indoors and outdoors.
His victory at the 2022 NCAA Indoor National Championships made him one of just two black coaches in Division I history to win ten team titles, regardless of sport.
During his time as the head coach of Florida, the Gators have 59 individual NCAA Championships on the men’s side and 31 on the women’s side.
Of Florida’s 137 all-time event national championships, 90 have come in the past 21 years with Holloway as the head coach.
The Gators have won 225 SEC Event Championships over the past 20 years and have won 17 Team SEC Championships (13 track & field/4 cross country) during that span.
Holloway has overseen the development of two recipients of the Bowerman since the award’s inception in 2009. Marquis Dendy won the award in 2015 before Grant Holloway capped off an outstanding collegiate career in 2019 with the same honor.
There have been four sweeps of the men’s 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Florida owns three of them, doing so in 2004, 2005, and 2017. And only the 2017 Gators nabbed the 60-meter hurdles title that same year.
During Holloway’s head coaching tenures and time as a men’s assistant coach, Gators under his tutelage have broken 18 collegiate records, eleven of which stand today.
Under his leadership, the women set NCAA Collegiate Records in the Outdoor Triple Jump, Indoor Long Jump, Indoor Triple Jump and Indoor 5000m in 2023.
Florida’s men broke the collegiate record in the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay during the 2023 Outdoor Season.
Along with his collegiate achievements, Holloway has enjoyed a great amount of success internationally. As the men’s head coach of the United States’ 2013 World Championships Team, Americans claimed 14 medals – four gold, eight silver and two bronze.
In addition to his head coaching experience at the 2013 IAAF World Championships, Holloway has had an athlete compete at every World Championships since 2001. Six of those athletes went on to become World Champions.
At the 2012 Olympics, Holloway coached Team USA’s sprinters and relay teams, helping the 4x400 relay squad win the silver medal and Justin Gatlin nab a bronze medal in the 100 meters.
Most recently, Holloway was named head coach to the 2020 US Men’s Track and Field Olympic Team, leading Gator Great Grant Holloway (silver – 110m hurdles) and senior Taylor Manson (bronze – 4x400 relays mixed) to their first Olympic medals.
Holloway has been named USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year 14 times during his career.
