Florida Gators

Randy Lane is in his fourth season as assistant coach with the University of Florida gymnastics program. Many top performances have been turned in by Gator gymnasts since his arrival, as both the school and team uneven bars records were achieved under his direction.
 
In 2003, Lane coached the Gator gymnasts to the nation’s top uneven bars total of the season – 49.675 at the Jan. 31 quad meet. At the same meet, Florida’s Erin Pendleton equaled the Gators’ All-Time Best uneven bars mark of 10.0 to claim one of her seven uneven bars meet titles of the season. The uneven bars was one of the Gators’ top events of the 2003 season, as Florida held the nation’s No. 1 position in four consecutive uneven bars rankings. Florida also performed well on the bars in 2004, achieving the nation’s fourth-highest team total (49.60) on the bars at the March 3 dual meet. Last season, the Gators were again a consistent top 10 team on the uneven bars.
 
Lane brought experiences as a competitor of a NCAA championship team and as a member of the coaching staff for two NCAA championship women’s teams to the Florida program.
 
Lane spent a total of six seasons with the UCLA Bruins in two different runs.  His most recent tenure with the Bruins as an assistant coach came in the 1998-2001 seasons.  While at UCLA, he was named the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000. He also won the 1998 West Region Assistant Coach of the Year honor.  His first tenure with the Bruins was in the 1992-94 seasons, also as an assistant coach.  While he was at UCLA, the Bruins claimed the NCAA team title in 2000 and ’01 and 19 athletes earned a total of 79 All-America awards.  The Bruin gymnasts also claimed a total of eight NCAA individual crowns from 1998-01.
           
Lane was the University of California-Santa Barbara Head Coach from 1995-97 and took a team that offered only one athletic scholarship to a fifth-place finish at the Gauchos’ first-ever USA Collegiate National Championships in 1996.  In 1997, the Gauchos set a school record with its 191.025 team score at the Big West Championships.  Lane coached Margie Hoeffler to the all-around title at the USA Gymnastics National Championships in 1996.
           
Lane was a member of the University of Illinois men’s gymnastics team that claimed the 1989 NCAA Championship.  He also was part of the Illini’s NCAA runner-up team in 1988 and was a member of two Big Ten Championship squads (1989,’88)
           
While competing for the Columbus Gymnastics Center, he won the Indiana State all-around title eight times and was the 1984 AAU Junior Olympic National parallel bar champion.  He was named the 1984 Indiana Outstanding Athlete over such notables as Indiana basketball legend and 1984 Olympic gold medalist Steve Alford.
           
Lane received his bachelor’s degree in speech communications from Illinois in 1989 and his master’s degree in Oriental Medicine/Acupuncture from the Santa Barbara College of Oriental Medicine in 1999.  He practiced as an acupuncture physician in New Port Richey, Fla., from 2001-02.
