Gators Qualify 3 Individuals, 400 FR into Saturday Night's FInals

400-Yard Freestyle Relay Marks School Record

ATLANTA -- Three University of Florida swimmers and the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay team qualified for Saturday night's finals session at the 2016 NCAA Championships this afternoon. Tonight's competition marks the fourth and final night of this week's championship event.
The Gators currently sit in third place behind Texas (366) and California (271) in the team standings, and look to improve on that figure with four scoring opportunities later tonight.
A major opportunity will be the 100-Yard Freestyle event, where sophomore Caeleb Dressel holds the number two seed time (41.73). The Green Cove Springs, native clocked the seed time in this afternoon's preliminary competition and solidifies his sixth All-America honor by securing a spot in tonight's 'A' final.
Senior Pawel Werner also competed in the 100-Yard Freestyle and finished 33rd overall with a time of 43.50 -- a season best.
Also competing in tonight's 'A' finals with a key scoring opportunity is the 400-Yard Freestyle relay team. Earlier today, the foursome of Dressel, sophomores Jan Switkowski and Mark Szaranek, and senior Corey Main registered a school record time of 2:48.70. The quartet solidified All-America honors with a second-place finish and look to knock off No. 1 seeded NC State (2:47.36).
Switkowski, and Main round out tonight's individual finalists for the Blue and Orange. Switkowski heads into the 200-Yard Butterfly event with the No. 9 seed while Main is set to compete in the 200-Yard Backstroke with the 16th seed time.
Switkowski, a Lublin, Poland, native, swam a 1:42.96 in the event to finish ninth among the field of 41. Sophomore Mark Szaranek (22nd, 1:43.91) and Austin Manganiello (28th, 1:44.21) also competed in the event.
Main's time of 1:40.74 marks a season-best and secures his third All-America Honor this week with the guaranteed Top-16 finish. Newcomers Brennan Balogh (31st, 1:42.19) and Alex Lebed (40th, 1:45.16), and junior Jack Blyzinskyj (34th, 1:43.00) rounded UF's participants in the event.
In the diving well, Freshman Sam Smith made his NCAA platform debut in and finished 35th among the 46-man field. The Knoxville, Tennessee native posted a six-dive score of 312.60 to cap his freshman season.
The Gators return to action this afternoon, starting with the 1,650-Freestyle competition at 3:45 p.m. ET, and tonight's finals at 6 p.m. Sophomores Blake Manganiello and Ben Lawless, and senior Arthur Frayler are scheduled to take part in the competition.
