Gators Log Four National Top Fives to Close Weekend
Saturday, February 11, 2017 | Track and Field
Florida totaled five NCAA Division I top fives and additional top-16 mark, adding to the Gators' list of NCAA Indoor Championship hopefuls
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The breakout performances by the Gators Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon at both the Tyson Invitational and Iowa State Classic, as Florida notched four times and marks that rank in the top five nationally.
Junior KeAndre Bates set everything off with a personal record of 16.76 meters (55 feet, 0 inches), taking runner-up honors in the triple jump. Bates' mark ranks second in Division I this year and eclipsed his previous PR, set two weeks ago at Razorback Invitational, by 10 centimeters.
Florida's men closed the meet with a time of 3:05.14 in the 4x400 relay, making them the No. 4-ranked team in the nation. Sophomore Kunle Fasasi split 46.03 seconds, by far the fastest leadoff leg from either invitational race, and freshman Grant Holloway clocked the third-fastest split of any runner (45.23) as the second leg. Redshirt senior Eric Futch made his season debut on the third leg, while redshirt junior TJ Holmes anchored the relay.
Freshman Clayton Brown was the top collegian in the high jump, clearing 2.24 meters (7 feet, 4.25 inches). Although he already holds the national lead at 2.25 meters, Brown's clearance Saturday would also lead the nation.
Florida will be back in action in two weeks at the SEC Indoor Championships (Feb. 24-25), which will be held in Nashville.
The complete table of results from this weekend is below.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on the team's performances at both meets today…
"Very pleased with the effort today. We challenged them to be a little bit more involved in the competition today, and I thought we did a good job of that. The big jump by KeAndre (Bates), the big jump by Yanis (David), both personal bests and moving up our school all-time list. Almost a school record for Yanis. The 4x4s, the women had a bit of a mishap, but really proud of what the men did today. Clayton Brown performed well in the high jump. In the 200s, Kunle (Fasasi) with a new personal best, Ryan Clark with a season best; he's rounding into shape. Really pleased with the overall effort today.
"At Iowa State, really pleased with Justin Pacifico and what he did with almost a full-second personal best. Have to figure out what is going on with Andres (Arroyo), but he just had a bad day. Two PRs in the mile for Carlos (Miranda) and Mac (Reynolds). So we're getting better. That's the big key overall: we just have to keep working. As long as we do that, we're going to be fine."
Holloway on what the key will be to stringing together two days of the intensity and focus he's looking for rather than just one…
"The big deal is now they know it's the championship season. We haven't started turning the screws, so to speak. We haven't come into a meet with the big rah rah speeches or anything like that. It has to be a quiet build to championship season. And it's here now. The student-athletes understand that, the coaches understand that … everybody will be a lot more focused, on point, and ready to get the job done. The biggest thing for us right now is we have to remember who we are, and how we do things. At the end of the day, this is the time of the year we show up and perform well, and we have to do that again."
