Gators Cap Pepsi Florida Relays with Four NCAA Leads, Five All-Time Top 10s
Saturday, April 1, 2017 | Track and Field
Florida added numerous NCAA East Preliminary qualifying marks this weekend, headlined by collegiate leads in the men's relays
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The final day of the 73rd Annual Pepsi Florida Relays saw the Gators post four NCAA Division I-leading times and marks, five Florida All-Time Top 10s, one of the wildest 4x400 relay finishes anyone will see this season, and a variety of record-breaking performances in relay events.
Jumpers KeAndre Bates and Yanis David, along with the men's 4x100 and 4x400 relays, posted national leads.
Bates, the 2017 USTFCCCA Indoor National Field Athlete of the Year, logged a top triple jump mark of 16.36 meters (53 feet, 6.25 inches). Entering this weekend, no collegiate triple jumper eclipsed 16 meters.
David continued her recent run of triple jumping over 13.50 meters, bounding out to 13.52 meters (44 feet, 4.25 inches). Only one other collegian had a season-best mark farther than 13.25 meters entering the weekend. David's 19-centimeter outdoor personal record moves her to No. 3 on UF's All-Time Outdoor Top 10.
The men's relay team of Michael Timpson Jr., Grant Holloway, Eric Futch, and Ryan Clark finished in 38.73 seconds, making them the No. 10-ranked quartet in school history.
Clark, Futch, and Holloway all came back to run the Jimmy Carnes Invitational 4x400 Relay—which clocked a 3:03.08 in a massive come-from-behind victory.
Not to be overshadowed, the women's 4x100 relay squad of Brandee' Johnson, Shayla Sanders, Destinee Gause, and Kyra Jefferson became only the third quartet in school history to break 43 seconds. Their time of 42.97 seconds is No. 2 nationally. Gause and Jefferson came back and, with Taylor Sharpe and Sharrika Barnett running the first two legs, clocked the second-fastest time in the nation and school history (3:27.33).
Junior thrower Lloydricia Cameron also logged a national top 10 for the Gators. The Miami, Fla. native took fourth in the invite shot put with a top mark of 16.90 meters (55 feet, 5.5 inches).
And there was this comeback win from Andres Arroyo and the Florida men's 4x800 relay:
Saturday's (April 1) Pepsi Florida Relays also featured two collegiate records (Oregon women's 4x100 and 4x200 relays), five meet records (Tumbleweed women's 4x200, Oregon women's 4x100, American Heritage Plantation boys 4x100, Miami Northwestern High School boys and girls 4x400s), and two Percy Beard Track records (Tumbleweed women's 4x200, Oregon women's 4x100).

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on the overall day of competition for the Gators…
"Today was the icing on the cake. We had a great Thursday, did a great job Friday, and today is about the relays. I'm very proud of the women. They ran against, arguably, the best sprint team ever—which broke the collegiate record in the 4x1 and 4x2, came back and ran a great time in the 4x4. But we stuck our nose in there and fought them in every relay we ran.
"Was also very pleased, overall, with the men and the things they did this weekend. One of the highlights of my day was that 4x8, watching a great run by Ryan Schnulle and a great anchor by Andres Arroyo."
Holloway on the top performances in the field…
"Lloydricia (Cameron) did a good job. She had a little hiccup in the discus yesterday, but came back and had the second-best throw of her life. Yanis (David) at 44 (feet) 4 (inches) I thought was a great job. KeAndre (Bates) was KeAndre; he's learning how to do what he needs to do to get to the next level."
Holloway on where he feels the team stands going forward…
"The thing I try to impress upon them is: what we did here does not define who we are. We have to understand, outdoors is about getting regional marks. We're stacking those up. Now we have to make sure we are ready to get to that meet, and be in the top 12 so we can get to the national championships and fight for a trophy."
