Seven Gators will either compete with a national team or vie for a spot on one this summer
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Florida volleyball will go international this summer, as six Gators were either named to a team or invited to a tryout for USA Volleyball, while a seventh will vie for a spot on the Canadian National Team.
Rising senior and three-time All-American Rhamat Alhassan and 2016 Olympian Kelly Murphy were named to the latest training roster for the U.S. Women's National Team. Murphy, a four-time All-American with the Gators from 2008-11, most recently helped the national team to a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics last August. Alhassan won a bronze medal at the Pan American Cup with the U.S. Women's National Team last July.
Training for the U.S. Women's National Team began Monday (May 1).
Rising redshirt senior Shainah Joseph earned a tryout with the Canadian Women's National Team, which will take part in the Pan American Cup (June 15-26) in Peru, as well as the FIVB World Grand Prix in July.
Incoming freshman Paige Hammons, UF's only signee in its 2017 class, will compete with the U.S. Women's Junior National Team at the 2017 U20 Women's Pan American Cup. The tournament will be May 8-13 in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Should the team qualify for the 2017 FIVB Volleyball U20 World Championship through the Pan American Cup, rising sophomore Rachael Kramer and rising redshirt freshman Mia Sokolowski will compete in a tryout for the worlds team.
Rising sophomore Darrielle King was also chosen to a USA team, as she secured a spot on the Collegiate National Team that will compete in Minneapolis.
According to USA Volleyball's release, the CNT-Minneapolis squad, which is part of USA Volleyball's High Performance pipeline and is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women's National Team, will train from June 22-26 at the University of Minnesota.
Afterward, the athletes will be assigned to one of three 12-member teams and compete in a round-robin format at the Minneapolis Convention Center from June 27-30. The matches are held in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships under the same roof.
