Sani Brown Races to Worlds, Six Gators Advance at National Championships
Sunday, June 25, 2017 | Track and Field
Hakim Sani Brown, at just 18 years old, won his first Japanese senior title to qualify for World Championships
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Incoming freshman and Japanese sprinter Hakim Sani Brown punched his ticket to August's IAAF World Championships, while four Gators advanced to finals and another two qualified for semifinals Saturday (June 24) afternoon.
Sani Brown won his first senior title in the 100 meters at the JAAF National Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan. The 18-year-old clocked a personal-best time of 10.05 seconds, punching his ticket to London.
Sani Brown also breezed through his 200 meters preliminary, winning his heat in 20.61 seconds. The 200 final is slated for 4:50 a.m. ET Sunday (June 25).
In the USATF Outdoor Championships 400 meters final, two-time Olympic 4x400 relay medalist Tony McQuay (2010-12) finished fifth in one of the deepest 400 meters races in history.
McQuay, who crossed in a season-best 44.51 seconds, is not guaranteed a Team USA spot, but could still be a 4x400 relay pool selection.
Also at USATF Outdoors, all three Gators advanced to the 400 hurdles final, with the surprise of the day being TJ Holmes' strong closing stretch that stole him the fourth and final berth from his heat.
Gator Great and reigning Olympic gold medalist Kerron Clement (2004-05) won his heat with the top overall qualifying time (48.61 seconds). In the same heat, Holmes crossed with a personal record of 48.98 seconds, improving his No. 5-ranked time on the Gators' All-Time Top 10.
Two-time reigning NCAA champion Eric Futch took the first heat, with his usual strong finish, in 48.63 seconds, the second-fastest qualifying time.
Collegiate record holder Kyra Jefferson (200 meters) and this year's NCAA champion Grant Holloway (110 hurdles) advanced in USATF Outdoors preliminary action. Both the semifinals and finals of their respective events will be on Sunday's (June 25) final day of competition.
At the Puma Jamaican Senior Championships, Gator Great and four-time Olympic 4x400 relay medalist Novlene Williams-Mills (2003-04) ran the third-fastest 400 meters semifinal time (50.62 seconds), automatically advancing to the final.
Additionally, SEC Indoor Freshman Field Athlete of the Year Clayton Brown won his second career Jamaican Senior Championships high jump crown with a top clearance of 2.15 meters (7 feet, 0.5 inches). Brown also won the title in 2015. However, Brown does not hold the World Championships qualifying standard.
In USATF Outdoor Junior Championships action, 400 hurdlers Brandee' Johnson and Cory Poole, an incoming freshman, both qualified for July's Pan American Junior Championships (July 21-23) in Lima, Peru.
Johnson, a freshman this past season, won the USA junior title to secure her spot. Poole took runner-up honors on the men's side, but broke the New Jersey state record and ran the 10th-fastest time in history by a high schooler, according to records maintained by Track and Field News (49.88 seconds).
Another one of Florida's incoming freshmen, Chantz Sawyers, qualified for the Pan Am Junior Championships via the Jamaican Junior Championships. Sawyers won the 400 meters in 46.31 seconds to qualify. Moreover, with this third-place finish in the 100 meters, Sawyers is likely to be in Jamaica's 4x100 and 4x400 relay pools in Peru.
Top-three finishers at the USATF Outdoor Championships clinch spots on Team USA, so long as they hold the IAAF World Championships qualifying standard.

SEVEN guys ran 44.80 or faster. That's only happened twice before: 2007 World Champs & 2016 Olympics.
