Holloway Earns Second USTFCCCA National Athlete of Week Honor
Tuesday, February 13, 2018 | Track and Field
Grant Holloway broke a collegiate record and was part of one of the best 4x400 relays the world has ever seen.
NEW ORLEANS – For the second time this season, sophomore hurdler, jumper, and sprinter Grant Holloway garnered United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Men's National Athlete of the Week honors, the organization announced Tuesday morning. Holloway was also named the SEC Men's Runner of the Week Tuesday afternoon.
Holloway broke the 60-meter hurdles collegiate record last Friday, crossing in 7.42 seconds and shaving three hundredths of a second off the record, set by Omar McLeod—who finished second to Holloway in the record-breaking race—at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships. That run also made Holloway, 20, the second man in history to run 7.42 or faster prior to his 21st birthday, joining Cuba's Dayron Robles as the only other man to do so (per records kept by alltime-athletics).
Holloway is now the No. 11-ranked American and tied for 20th on the all-time world indoor list.
The Chesapeake, Va., native delivered an impressive follow-up performance Saturday afternoon with Florida's 4x400 relay team. Holloway split 45.12 seconds—the third-fastest split by anyone in the field—as the Gators' second leg, helping them clock the second-fastest time in collegiate history and fourth-fastest time ever recorded. Florida's time of 3:02.23 broke the previous collegiate record, though Southern California took the victory in 3:01.98—the second-fastest time ever run—and set the new standard.
Earlier this season, Holloway became the only man in collegiate history to crack the collegiate all-time top 10 in the 60 hurdles and with a 4x400 relay team. Holloway is also the only collegian in history to run 7.53 seconds or faster in the 60 hurdles and long jump at least 7.90 meters indoors. Wisconsin's Reggie Torian (1994-97) was the closest, touting collegiate PRs of 7.47 seconds and 7.89 meters.
Holloway currently leads the nation in the 60 hurdles and ranks fourth nationally in the long jump.
Last Thursday, Holloway and teammate KeAndre Bates appeared on the latest watch list for The Bowerman, track and field's highest individual honor.
And here's a closer look at some of Holloway's achievements from his debut season last year:
Holloway and the Gators continue their 2018 season next Saturday and Sunday at the SEC Indoor Championships.
