BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Wednesday the Southeastern Conference announced that University of Florida men's tennis student-athlete Oliver Crawford was named the SEC Freshman of Week.
The Spartanburg, S.C. native earned his first career SEC honor after dominant performances against both No. 18 Georgia and No. 25 Tennessee.
Oliver played a huge role in helping the Gators defeat the Bulldogs by clinching the doubles point with partner Chase Perez-Blanco as well as clinching the match at the No. 4 singles position. His win in singles was also his first win against an opponent ranked in the ITA singles rankings. He defeated Jan Zielinski, who was ranked 28th, by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. This was Florida's first win against Georgia at home since 2010.
On Sunday against the Volunteers, Crawford was equally impressive with dominating wins at doubles (6-4) and in singles (6-1, 6-0). He started his SEC career with a perfect 4-0 record.
Crawford has put together a solid freshman campaign this season. He has compiled a 5-3 record in dual matches including a 4-2 record at No. 4 singles. In doubles, he is 8-3 this season with a 5-1 record at No. 3 doubles and a 3-2 record at the No. 2 position.
Crawford's strong showing this season has also earned him a spot in the ITA singles rankings for the first time in his career. In the March 6 edition of the rankings, he debuted at No. 93. He is also ranked No. 10 in doubles with Perez-Blanco.
Florida will be on the road this weekend with trips to No. 27 Mississippi State at 4 p.m. ET on Friday and Auburn at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
