Florida hosts Florida State in the second round on Saturday at 4 p.m.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida dusted off its racquets following a 20-day break and seemingly didn't miss a beat in its 4-0 shutout against Youngstown State in the first round of the NCAA Championships held at Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex Friday afternoon.
The Gators, seeded No. 9 in the 64-team field, came out quickly in their first ever meeting against the Penguins and needed 31 minutes to take a 1-0 lead in the team scoring after efficient doubles play.
UF's team of McCartney Kessler and Josie Kuhlman didn't lost their serve en route to its 6-2 win and provide the first individual win of the match.
Katie Kubicz and Peggy Porter followed seconds later with a 6-1 victory on court three that sealed the doubles point.
The Gators continued their focus on the singles courts, where they won the first set in all six matches and not one player relinquished more than two games.
Kessler was the first off the court, as she posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory and collected her team-leading 18th dual match singles win of the season.
Kubicz then gave Florida a 3-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-2 decision on court six and won for the seventh time in her last 10 matches.
Porter provided the final dual match win, netting a 6-1, 6-1 final on court five and improved to 5-1 this year in clinching singles victories.

UF Coach Roland Thornqvist
Thoughts on the match:
"We're happy to advance. I thought we played pretty well for having a three-week-long layoff. We got off to a really fast start on (courts) two and three and were able to carry that momentum all the way through. I was happy to see that we got off the court quickly in the matches where we built big leads in singles. It's always nice to play a team in the NCAA Tournament that you haven't seen before. That's what makes this event so special to me. Youngstown State's a great team and well-coached. It was a great match for us."
On tomorrow's match against Florida State:
"I think Florida State has had a really good year. Obviously, I know (FSU coach) Jenn (Hyde) really well since we worked together at North Carolina a couple decades ago. They really beat us badly in February. I want to maintain what I've said leading up to this tournament, that we are a completely different team than we were in February. Taking those losses early in the season, that experience made us who we are today. I think we're a much more resilient team now than we were back then. I think it's going to be a fantastic tennis match tomorrow. They have great players, one through six. It's going to come down to end-of-set play. I think we're in a much better place as a team in that category than we were back then."
UF Senior Peggy Porter
On winning several games after trailing early:
"My shots weren't all there today as I would have like, but it was nice to be able to work through that and rely on making balls and thinking through it instead. I was able to think my way through it and ended up playing pretty well at the end of the match."
On clinching the dual match:
"The girl I played was pretty good. She played similar to me, she liked taking her forehand cross court. It was nice to play someone against whom I could stay in my game. I was able to move forward a lot which is something I don't usually do. It was a good match."
On tomorrow's match against Florida State:
"I know our whole team has been dying to play FSU since that match. We've improved so much in every aspect and I think it's nice to come full circle and have the opportunity to play that team again."
UF Freshman McCartney Kessler
On how she felt playing her singles match:
"It was nice to get a good rhythm moving forward in the next matches. She was a tall, big girl and hit really hard so I just had to stay focused on my game as much as I could."
On making her NCAA Championships debut:
"It's exciting. Today was a pretty simple match. I'm looking forward to playing tomorrow."
On tomorrow's match against Florida State:
"I'm really excited to play them again. Ever since our first match against them, I've been hoping we would play them again in this tournament. I feel like we're a lot better of a team now so I think it will be a much better match."
