GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Florida gymnastics squad used its season-best team total to advance to the NCAA Championship's team final, set for Friday at 7 p.m. in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. This is the second appearance for the Gator gymnastics team in the team final, dubbed the "Super Six". Florida also qualified for the Super Six in 1994, finishing sixth overall.
The top three teams from each of Thursday's two sessions advance to the Super Six. In the afternoon session, Georgia (197.075), UCLA (196.425) and Nebraska (196.025) advanced to the team final. Nebraska and Utah tied for the third and final qualifying position, but Nebraska won the tiebreaker, which is comprised of adding the sixth score on each event to the final team score.
The Gators moved into the second session's third qualifying position in the final rotation, edging Washington for the crucial spot by a tenth of a point (196.075-195.975). Arizona State won the second session at 196.275, while top-seeded Michigan was second at 196.200.
Gator freshman Chrissy Van Fleet earned first-team All-America honors by tying for fourth overall in the all-around competition with her second-best collegiate total of 39.425. Van Fleet's all-around showing is the top Gator all-around finish ever by a freshman. She was the only freshman among the meet's top six all-arounders. Florida's other all-arounder, freshman Jaime Graziano of Parkland, was 16th at 39.175.
