UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA JOINS GROUP OF 1998-99 SEARS COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONS

Division I Soccer Championship Earns University of Florida a Waterford Crystal ? Sport Champion Vase and $1,000 Academic Scholarship
Chicago, Ill. (December 8, 1998) – By virtue of its win at the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship Sunday in Greensboro, N.C., the University of Florida has been awarded a Sears Sport Champion Vase and $1,000 postgraduate academic scholarship. The Waterford Crystal â trophy and scholarship were presented to the Gators following the team's 1-0 win over defending champion University of North Carolina.
Florida also earned 100 points in the race for the Sears Directors' Cup, presented annually by the nation's athletics directors as a reward for earning the only all-sports competition in intercollegiate athletics. The final Fall standings for the Division I Sears Directors' Cup will be published January 7.
Presented in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Sears Sport Champion Vases and accompanying $1,000 postgraduate academic scholarships are awarded at all 105 NACDA-recognized national championship events. The Division I Women's Soccer Championship was one of 29 Fall Championship events, which conclude January 4 with the college football National Championship Game at the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz.
Including national championships, conference championships, and the race for the Sears Directors' Cup, Sears presents more than 2,200 trophies and more than a quarter of a million dollars in academic scholarships to NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA institutions each year. By the end of 1998, Sears will have awarded more than $1 million in academic scholarships and 10,000 trophies. The six-year-old program will recognize each Division I, II, III and NAIA sport champion institution with a Waterford Crystal â vase and academic scholarship.
