Thursday, March 23, 2000 | Men's Tennis
The second-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team (13-2) lost just one set in nine matches as it rolled to a 7-0 victory over Florida State (9-5) Wednesday at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
The Gators, who moved up to a program-best No. 2 in the rankings earlier in the day, remain unbeaten at home this season (8-0) and have won 10 straight at Ring Tennis Complex dating back to last season. Florida now leads the all-time series with the Seminoles, 41-19, including three consecutive wins over Florida State.
Senior Justin O'Neal, who is ranked 12th in the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Rankings, rolled to his ninth straight win, 6-2, 6-3 over Mike Ingham at number two singles to give UF a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Olivier Levant followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Noah Schnell at number four before junior Nathan Overholser (pictured) clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Jay Travis at number three. The win for Overholser was his team-leading fourth clinching win of the year and his fourth win in a row. Senior Trey Adcock downed Rodrigo Laub at number six (6-1, 6-3) in his first dual appearance since February 12 and senior Dylan Mann won his second straight with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Chad Mooney at number five singles. In the final match of the day, Gator junior Jeff Morrison, who is ranked seventh, rallied for a three-set victory over Xavier Luscan, who is ranked 28th.
The Gators had opened the match by claiming the doubles point for the fifth straight match. Florida swept all three matches by scores of 8-4. At number two doubles O'Neal teamed with Levant to win his 78th career doubles match, tying former Gator Mark Merklein (78 doubles wins 1991-94) for second place on UF's all-time list. Levant and O'Neal remained unbeaten at 4-0 in dual play. Morrison and Overholser captured their fifth consecutive win at number one and junior Marcos Asse and Mann won in their spring debut after going 10-2 as a duo in the fall.
Florida will return to SEC play this Friday, March 24 when it hosts 24th-ranked Auburn at 4:30 p.m. at Ring Tennis Complex.
