The 10th-ranked University of Florida women's swimming and diving team hosted its home opener today against the University of Texas in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. The Gators rallied in the final three events to defeat the Longhorns by the score of 152-148. The Gators improve their record to 8-2 on the year.
The Gators entered the three-meter diving portion of the meet down by 11 points, but after a victory by senior Robyn Grimes (Pennington N.J./ Hopewell Valley Central H.S.) with 310.88 points and a second-place finish with a score of 285.53 by freshman Nicole Bolt (Orlando/Dr. Phillips H.S.) the Gators had tied the score at 132. In the 400-yard individual medley, the Gators took the top with three places with freshman Jaime Ellis (Spring, Texas/ Klein Oak H.S.) swimming a winning time of 4:19.95. Florida entered the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, up by 13 points and only needing to take one of the top two spots. The Gators were able to do that as they finished in second-place to win the meet.
Also turning in a big performance for the Gators was freshman Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica/The Bolles School) who posted a double victory. She won the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 16:10.74 to gain an automatic spot to the NCAA Championships. Atkinson then came back later in the meet to post a time of 4:48.02 to win the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Sara McLarty (Deland H.S.) posted a winning time of 2:03.17 in the 200-yard butterfly and freshman Cerian Gibbes (Trinidad/The Bolles School) touched the wall in 2:20.09 to win the 200-yard breaststroke. Bolt won the one-meter diving with a score of 288.68.
The women will have next weekend off before they return to the pool on Jan. 26 in Boca Raton, Fla. in tri-meet action against Indian River Community College and Florida Atlantic. On Jan. 27 the Gators will continue their road trip to Coral Gables, Fla. to compete against Miami. The team will host its final home meet of the season when they swim against the Lady Volunteers from Tennessee on Feb. 3.
