Adidas Tournament - Day 1
Women's Tennis Perfect in Debut Spring Tournament
Saturday, January 27, 2001 | Women's Tennis
Five members of the University of Florida women's tennis team combined for a 7-0 record in singles play and a 1-0 doubles record in the first day of action at the Adidas Tournament held at the Lake Cain Public Tennis Courts in Orlando. This is the first action of the year for the Gators, who enter the Spring season tied for No. 2 in the country.
"This was a heck of a day for us," UF head coach Andy Brandi said. "We started off the day a little rusty, but we had some great results by the end of play today."
All four Gators competing in the Flight A Singles Draw advanced to the quarterfinals where they all face players from Duke. Senior Whitney Laiho (Newport, RI) was the only Gator who did not receive a first- round bye, but she used her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Northwestern's Shannon Duffy as a tune-up for blasting Notre Dame's Michelle Dasso, who is the No. 3 ranked singles player in the country, 6-2, 6-2. Laiho meets Duke's Megan Miller on Saturday at 8 a.m.
Junior Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL), ranked No. 17 in the nation, topped Notre Dame's Beck Varnum 6-4, 7-5 to set up a quarterfinal matchup with No. 16-ranked Amanda Johnson. Freshman Aneta Soukup (Ft. Myers, FL) won her debut collegiate match, posting a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Notre Dame's Nina Vaughan. Soukup next faces Duke's Kathy Sell, ranked No. 14. Freshman Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) topped Tennessee's Agnes Wiski 7-6, 6-2 in her Round of 16 match to set up a date with Duke's Ansley Cargill, the second-ranked player in the country and the top-seed in the Adidas Tournament.
Freshman Annika Bengtsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) was the lone Gator competing in the Flight B draw and had no trouble with her first two rounds on Friday. Bengtsson record a 6-1, 6-1 win over Northwestern's Ruth Barnes in the first round before topping Notre Dame's Alicia Salas 6-3, 6- 4 in the second. The win sent the Gator into the semifinals.
In doubles action Bengtsson and Dawaf paired in the Flight B draw and earned a 9-7 win over Notre Dame's Caylan Leslie and Alicia Salas in the opening round. UF's Laiho and Lehnhoff automatically advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A draw after the Northwestern pair they were scheduled to play defaulted because of injury.
