The No. 4-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team swept No. 30 Florida State 7-0 in the Gators season-opener played at Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles fall to 2-2 overall for the season.
"This was a heck of a match for us," UF head coach Andy Brandi said. "It was a great effort by our players. It was a fantastic way to open the season."
Playing under the new scoring format for the first time, the Gators captured the doubles point to begin the match. Florida then turned its attention to the singles courts, where the Gators overwhelmed their hosts by posted straight-set wins at all six positions.
Freshman Lindsay Dawaf opened her collegiate dual match career in style with a smashing 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nanette Duxin at the No. 4 position.
Senior Whitney Laiho earned the start at the No. 1 position and showed her form by posting a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Alida Gallovits.
Junior Jessica Lehnhoff downed Christina Denny 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. Senior Stephanie Hazlett played her first singles match since the NCAA Championships last May and dusted off the rust with a solid 6-2, 6-3 win over Jessica Balbuena at the No. 3 position.
Sophomore Julia Scaringe downed Marina Raic 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5, while freshman Annika Bengtsson also launched a successful dual match career with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Christy Travis at the No. 6 spot.
Florida returns to action on Sunday, when the Gators play host to Kentucky in the team's home opener. Florida is 99-0 all-time at home against Southeastern Conference opponents.
