UF is now 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in SEC action while the Wildcats slip to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in SEC play. The Gators have never lost at home in SEC dual match play, now standing at a perfect 100-0 all-time.
"I thought we did a good job," UF head coach Andy Brandi said. "Kentucky's a good feisty team. So, it's a tough team to play. I knew it was going to be close."
UF took the doubles point to open the match 14th ranked Laiho and Jessica Lehnhoff ran out to a 4-0 lead before posting a 8-3 win at No. 1. Freshmen Annika Bengtsson and Lindsay Dawaf clinched their match moments later, posting a 8-4 victory at No. 3 to secure the doubles point.
The freshman also posted quick singles wins to put UF up 3-0. Dawaf won the first nine games of her match en route to beating Leigh Bradwell, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles just one second before Bengtsson completed her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Amy Trefethen of UK. Laiho secured the Gator victory with a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Carolina Mayorga.
Sarah Witten got UK its first victory when she won the final seven points in a tiebreaker to defeat UF's Stephanie Hazlett, 7-5, 7-6 (2). Julie Scaringe gave UF it's fifth match win with her 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at No. 5, converting on her first match point. UK's Skeen wrapped up play with a 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-2 upset win over 17th ranked Jessica Lehnhoff at No. 2.
The Gators return to action Feb. 22 when they travel to Tampa to face South Florida.
