The University of Florida's Annika Bengtsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) won their respective singles matches at today's first day of play at the Gator Fall Classic, held at the Ring Tennis Complex. Action continues on Saturday beginning at 8:00 a.m.
"Overall, I thought we had a pretty good day," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "Annika is playing with a lot of confidence right now and it shows. Alexis gutted out a tough three-setter today and kept competing. Julia (Scaringe) had a rough day, but her opponent really played well."
Bengtsson, the No. 2 seed in the Flight A draw, defeated South Florida's Genevieve Houle 6-0, 6-2, while Gordon topped Florida Atlantic's Tania Rivera 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
"I feel like I'm playing pretty well," Bengtsson said. "My back has been bothering me this week and I didn't know how it would react, but it was fine."
"It felt good to play on our home courts and hit on the surface that we're familiar with," said Gordon, who is a freshman playing her first collegiate matches on UF's home courts.
Bengtsson and Gordon later paired together for the first time in their young careers and defeated Kentucky's Shannon Stafford and Amy Trefethen 8-5.
"You never really know how you're going to play with another person, but we had very good chemistry," Bengtsson said of her debut with Gordon. "I think we match up well together."
"Everything flowed for us," Gordon said of the doubles match. "It felt comfortable."
UF junior Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) struggled in her first round match against Kentucky's Amy Trefethen and lost 6-3, 7-5. It was the first competition of the year for Scaringe, but Trefethen played extremely well in the victory.
