University of Florida senior Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) advanced to the semifinals of the Women's Riviera All-American Tennis Championships after upsetting No. 1-ranked Bea Bielik from Wake Forest 6-1, 4-0 Friday afternoon. Bielik retired from the match in the second set due to cramping.
The Riviera All-American is one of three national tennis championships played during the college season.
Lehnhoff faces Fresno State's Kim Niggemeyer in the semifinal on Saturday at the Riviera Tennis Club. Old Dominion's Nataly Cahana and Duke's Kelly McCain will face each other in the other semi. Lehnhoff, a three-time ITA All-American, will be making her first semifinal singles appearance at a national tournament (she reached the quarterfinals at the '00 NCAA Championships). She captured the NCAA doubles title last season with now-graduated Whitney Laiho, and also advanced to tomorrow's doubles semis.
In Lehnhoff's second round match played Friday morning, the Gator topped Georgia's Agata Cioroch 6-2, 7-5. Cioroch, a sophomore, entered the match with a career singles record of 33-0, 7-0 this season.
"Jessica is playing phenomenal tennis right now," UF assistant coach Dave Balogh said. "In her quarterfinal match against Bielik, she came out on fire and played tremendous. She's playing at a whole different level right now."
Lehnhoff then paired with Gator sophomore Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) and advanced to the semifinals of the doubles draw with an inspiring 8-5 victory over Boise State's Helen Lawson and Renate Stoop. The Florida duo trailed 4-2, 40-love in the 8-game pro-set until rallying for the victory.
"We are so mentally tough right now," Balogh said. "Jessica and Lindsay are playing the big points really well and that has been the difference in their play."
Dawaf lost her first round consolation singles match 6-3, 7-5 to Kentucky's Carolina Mayorga.
"Lindsay competed much better in her match today than yesterday so I was pleased with her effort," Balogh said.
