All four members from the University of Florida women’s tennis team competing in the Omni Hotels South Regional Championship advanced to the singles round of 16 after each recorded a pair of wins Friday afternoon at the Mobile Tennis Center. The Gator foursome then teamed to comprise two doubles teams, which won their respective first round matches as well.
Through a total of eight matches played today, the Gators won 16 of 17 sets, including the ‘double-bagel’ posted by sophomore Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD), who topped Birmingham-Southern’s Jessica Griffin 6- 0, 6-0 in the first round. Dawaf is the No. 2 seed in the 64-player singles draw.
“Today was an incredibly difficult day to play because of the wind gusts, which were 20 to 30 miles per hour, but we were able to compete our way through it,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “It was cold in the morning and extremely windy, but we did a great job of fighting and had a good attitude to get through today’s matches.”
Junior Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) had perhaps the toughest second round match of the Gator quartet, but emerged with a hard-fought 3- 6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ole Miss’ Karem Harboe.
“It was good to see that at a crucial time toward the end of the third set, Julia was able to step up her game and close out the match,” Thornqvist said of Scaringe’s victory. “She raised her level of play, which was really good to see considering she hasn’t competed in a while. I think she feels a lot better about her game after today’s play.”
UF sophomore Annika Bengtsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) and freshman Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) joined Gator teammates Dawaf and Scaringe in the Round of 16, which begins Saturday morning.
In doubles action Dawaf and Scaringe earned the No. 2 seed in the 32-team doubles draw and topped Jacksonville State’s Sophie De’Smet and Sally Pearson 8-4, while Bengtsson and Gordon paired for an 8-1 victory over Auburn’s Petra Bercik and Carolina Ramirez in the opening round.
The singles finalists and doubles champions from this weekend’s tournament advance to the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held November 8-11 at the Brookhaven Country Club located just outside of Dallas in Farmers Branch, Texas. This event is the second of three national collegiate tennis championships during the 2000-01 season (for singles and doubles). The first, the Riviera Women's and ITA Men's All-American Championships, took place last week, and the third are the year-end NCAA Championships.
UF senior Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) won the Riviera All- American singles title and paired with Lindsay Dawaf to capture the doubles crown. For winning the Riviera All-American, Lehnhoff received an automatic bid into both draws of the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and will not have to qualify this weekend.
