UF Soph Tops Teammate in W-Tennis Regional Final
Monday, October 29, 2001 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Linsday Dawaf (Olney, MD) defeated teammate Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) 6-3, 6-1 in the final of the Omni Hotels South Regional Women's Tennis Championships.
The four-day event began in Mobile, Ala., but once the finals became an all-Gator affair the decision was made to return to Gainesville and play the final at home on Monday instead of in Mobile, Ala., so the student-athletes would not miss any classes.
Dawaf won all six of her matches in straight sets en route to the title. Gordon, an unranked freshman, corralled a pair of upsets of nationally ranked opponents on her path to the finals.
As finalists, Dawaf and Gordon earned bids into the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held November 8-11 at the Brookhaven Country Club located just outside of Dallas in Farmers Branch, Texas. This event is the second of three national collegiate tennis championships during the 2001-02 season (for singles and doubles). The first, the Riviera Women's and ITA Men's All-American Championships, took place two weeks ago, and the third are the year-end NCAA Championships.
Dawaf and Gordon join UF senior Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) in the national event. Lehnhoff secured a spot in the singles and doubles draws after winning the Riviera All-American singles title and then pairing with Dawaf to capture the doubles crown.
