The No. 1 Gators moved from a dismal 12th place position after round one to finish fifth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate hosted by Georgia Tech Sunday, October 7. UF was tied for sixth after round two and concluded their stellar climb with a 26-over 890.
Two UF golfers finished in the top-15, with one Gator claiming individual runner-up honors. Named 2001 Freshman of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the Southeastern Conference (SEC), sophomore Camilo Villegas (Mendellin, Colombia) took second place with his final 4-under 212. Junior Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla.) tied for 14th and was the only Gator to score an Eagle on the day.
Senior Camilo Benedetti (Mendellin, Colombia) jumped 13 spots in the final today to finish tied for 30th. Junior transfer Ari Savolainen (Helsinki, Finland) carded a 234 (+18) to finish T59. In his first tournament with the Gators, sophomore Robert Litsey (Palatka, Fla.) finished 72nd shooting a 27-over 243.
Tournament host Georgia Tech won the tournament firing an 6-under 858, with the nearest opponent, Tennessee, at 4-over 868. Clemson boasted the individual champion in D.J. Trahan. Trahan burned up the links totaling a 6-under 210 after carding back-to-back 69's in the first two rounds.
The Gators will now return to their home state for their final tournament of the fall season. UF co-hosts the Gary Koch Invitational with Central Florida on October 15-16 at the Old Memorial Golf Course in Tampa, Fla. UF will then be on a winter break until February 9-10 when they host the Gator Invitational at the newly renovated UF Golf Course.
