Gators Eliminated from Nat’l Indoor Tennis Champs
Saturday, November 10, 2001 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women’s tennis team had a tough second day of play at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships, as all three Gators were eliminated.
This was the final tennis event of the Fall season for Florida, which next returns to action on February 8, 2002, when the Gators open their dual match season at Florida International.
“It was a tough day for the Gators, but we had a great Fall season,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Everyone learned something about their game and areas we need to work on to get ready for the Spring season.”
UF senior Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) lost her quarterfinal match to Duke freshman Kelly McCain 6-2, 6-4. Earlier in the day Lehnhoff, who was the top-seed in the 32-player singles, defeated third-ranked Adria Engel from Arizona State 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.
“We have to give a lot of credit to Jessica’s opponent today,” Thornqvist said. “Kelly played an outstanding match. Her forehand was clearly the dominant shot of the match.”
Sophomore Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) battled in her second round match, but fell to second-ranked Lauren Kalvaria from Stanford 6-3, 6-4.
“Lindsay played an okay match today,” Thornqvist said. “She just made a few tactical errors that was the difference in the match.”
In the consolation singles draw, Gator freshman Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) dropped her first round match to ninth-ranked Amanda Johnson from Duke 6-1, 7-6.
The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships is the second of three national championship events on the collegiate circuit scheduled during the 2001-02 season.
