Gator DE Named Lombardi Award Finalist

Florida senior defensive end Alex Brown (White Springs, Fla.) was named one of four finalists on Tuesday for the Rotary Lombardi Award which is annually presented to the nation’s best lineman or linebacker. Brown reaches the finals for the first time after being a semifinalist in both 1999 and 2000. Brown is joined as a finalist by LB Rocky Calmus of Oklahoma, DE Dwight Freeney of Syracuse and DE Julius Peppers of North Carolina.
Brown is second in the SEC with his 9.5 sacks on the season and 12.5 total tackles for loss. Brown holds Florida career sack record with 32 (and season sack record of 13 set in 1999) and ranks eighth in school history with his 45 career tackles for loss. In 2001, Brown has made 46 tackles and leads team in “Big Plays” with 32.5, a sum 10 greater than any of his teammates. Accounting for the 32.5 total are: 9.5 sacks, three tackles behind the line, 12 forced hurries, four pass deflections, three blocked kicks and one forced fumble.
The winner will be announced on December 5 in Houston.
