The University of Florida's women's swimming and diving team received letters of intent from three swimmers for the 2002-03 season as announced by head coach Gregg Troy Tuesday. All Three athletes have been U.S. National Champions and one has been on the U.S. World Championship team.
"We filled some key weaknesses," Troy said. "With these three signees we look real good. We might still have some depth problems but we are very strong. These women have some incredible potential among them."
Jaime Reid hails from Puyallup, Wa. where she graduated from Puyallup High School. Reid is a two-time U.S. National Champion in the 200-meter backstroke (2000,'01) and is ranked 15th in the world for the event. She was a member of the 2001 U.S. World Championship and 1998 Goodwill Games teams. She proved her versatility in the 2000 U.S. Open where she won the 200-meter backstroke and 200-meter butterfly, took second in the 100-meter backstroke and fourth in the 400-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly. She swam for the Lake Highlands Swim Team in Orlando, Fla.
"Jamie's [Reid] versatility will make a big difference on our team next year," Troy said. "She is definitely our most high profile recruit with incredible speed in every event."
Traveling from the same part of the country, Jaime Tannhauser will graduate from Juanita High School in Seattle, Wa. Tannhauser was added for her distance freestyle skills. She swam on the Salmon Bay Aquatics club team in Seattle. She took eighth in the 800-meter freestyle in the 2000 Olympic trials and was a member of the National Junior Championships Team. She was a 2001 Junior National Champion in the 1500-meter freestyle and a Washington State champion in the 200-yard freestyle.
"Adding Jaime [Tannhauser] gives us probably the best distance freestyle group in the country," Troy said. "Her skills give us the opportunity to move around our talented veterans into other events."
From Kansas City, Kan., Danielle Duncan swam for the Kansas City Blazers and will graduate from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park, Kan. Duncan is an accomplished breaststroker who was a 2001 Junior National Champion in both the 100- and 200-meter events. She also scored in the 200-meter breaststroke in the 2001 Senior Nationals.
"We are slim in the breaststroke and Danielle is a great addition," Troy said. "We need to build up some depth in the breaststroke and she is a good way to start. She has some world-class potential."
