Wednesday, December 19, 2001 | Men's Basketball
The Gators took a 51-37 lead into the halftime locker room with Nelson making four three-pointers and scoring 12 points. Six different Gators scored during a 26-0 run to open the second half. The Gators biggest lead was 100-45 with LaDarius Halton's dunk getting Florida to the century mark. The Panthers didn't score their first points in the second half until Ron Barrow made a field goal with 12:56 remaining. High Point's 12 second-half points were the fewest allowed in a half by the Gators since 1992.
Florida shot a blistering 59 percent for the game--64 percent in the second half--and they owned a big 51-32 edge in rebounding. The Gators also forced 25 High Point turnovers, their seventh consecuitve game forcing 20 or more turnovers.
"We got up by 18 and 20, and got a little complacent," Gator coach Billy Donovan said. "But I really felt like after halftime our basketball team performed pretty well, both offensively and defensively."
Bonner shared scoring honors with Nelson while adding 11 rebounds. It was the 13th double-double of his career. Udonis Haslem, the Co-Player of the Week in the SEC, recorded his second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman David Lee scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed seven boards. James White just missed double figures with nine points.
Donovan said there was a lot to like about the lop-sided victory.
"We played very unselfish, guys moved the basketball, we had several guys in double figure scoring," Donovan said. "We had a pretty good performance by everyone, as a whole."
The win over High Point began a five-game homestand for the Gators. The Gators will face the New Orleans Privateers Saturday at 3 p.m.
