Spurrier Named AFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year
Wednesday, December 5, 2001 | Football
Spurrier is joined as a finalist for the national award by Maryland’s Ralph Friedgen, Illinois’ Ron Turner, Nebraska’s Frank Solich and Washington State’s Mike Price. The winner will be announced on Jan. 8 at the 2002 AFCA Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Spurrier led the Gators to a 9-2 record in 2001 and a current national ranking of No. 6 in both the AP and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls. The Gators won nine games this year for the 12th consecutive season, breaking the previous SEC record of 11 years set by Alabama from 1971-81 under Paul “Bear” Bryant. If Florida receives word on Sunday that it will be participating in a January bowl game, it would be its SEC record ninth consecutive year appearing in a January bowl game, a total that would also tie for the fourth longest such streak in college football history. This week, Florida appeared in the polls for the 200th consecutive week under Spurrier, the third longest streak in major college history and the nation’s second longest active streak behind only Nebraska.
