Men's Tennis Loses To #5 Texas A&M, 5-2
Saturday, February 24, 2001 | Men's Tennis
"I don't think we played very well today but sometimes good teams can make you play badly and they are a very good team," UF head coach Ian Duvenhage said. "I don't know how to assess that. They played at a higher level than us and they won."
Texas A&M cruised to a doubles point win behind victories at No. 2 and No. 3 but a thrilling match at No. 1 would see Gator history. Overholser and freshman Jeremy Wurtzman (Rochester, NY) saved a match point before tying their match against Shuon Madden and Dumitru Caradima at 8-8. The Gator duo won the final three points of the tie breaker for the 9-8 (7-4) win, with Overholser finishing the match with a powerful forehand at the net. It is Overholser's 88th career doubles win, equaling Justin O'Neal's school-record career sum set from 1996-2000.
When singles play began, the Aggies took a quick 3-1 lead overall by winning two of the first three matches. Tres Davis needed just 1:04 to post a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 for Texas A&M over UF freshman Ross Greenstein (Minnetonka, Minn.). Sophomore Troy Hahn (Indianapolis, Ind.) brought the Gators to within one point with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Cody Hubbell at No. 4 but Keith From would finish strong for the Aggies, taking a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 5 over sophomore Matt Behrmann (Indianapolis, Ind.) for a 3-1 Texas A&M edge.
Madden clinched the match for the Aggies with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Overholser at No. 1. Serving up 5-4 in the second set, Madden would save five straight break points before converting on his first match point to seal the team victory. Freshman Jeremy Wurtzman (Rochester, NY) got a win at No. 3 for UF when Ryan Newport retired due to vision problems in the third set and Caradima wrapped up the match with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win for TAMU at No. 2 over junior Olivier Levant (Paris, France).
The Gators will return to action on Feb. 28 when they host No. 39 Arkansas at 5:00 pm in their SEC opener.
