Gator Track Takes Advantage of Last Chance Meet
Thursday, March 1, 2001 | Track and Field
Since the "bubble" is the buzz word of the month with the NCAA basketball tournament approaching, the Florida men's and women's track and field teams used today's Fast Times Last Chance Qualifer as a means to improve marks and get off the proverbial bubble. The Gators had a total of 12 qualifying marks at today's meet (eight men, four women). There were a total of 48 qualifying marks throughout the day by all competitors.
Freshman Moise Joseph, competing in his second meet as a Gator, was the winner of the 800m with an automatic qualifying time of 1:48.43. His time ranks him second in the nation for 2001 and fourth all-time at the University of Florida. Joseph couples this qualification with last weekend's mark in the mile. Aaron Armstrong followed that with an automatic qualifying time of his own in the 200m. Armstrong moved into a tie for third in the country.
The men's hurdlers had a one, two three finish in the finals. Rickey Harris broke through for an NCAA provisional mark in the final with a time of 7.29, ranking him 15th in the NCAA. His teammate Paul Brown was second, also with a provisional mark of 7.33. Stephen Jones was third with a provisional mark that was not as fast as one of his times from earlier in the year. Aaron Armstrong qualified for the NCAA championships by winning the 55m dash. Armstrong had a time of 6.24, which is good enough for a tie for 19th in the nation.
Chris Duncan came into today's meet with the 24th fastest mile in the country. He improved his liffeftime best with a mark of 4:04.12 and now ranks 22nd.
On the women's side of things, Candice Scott didn't waste any time as she improved her standing in the weight throw with a personal best of 63-5.5. She came into the meet at 14th on the national list and came out of it number eight.
Gainesville native Hilary White set a new personal best with a time of 5:03.00. She finished in sixth place overall. In all, Florida had four runners in the Top 12 with Eliana Lopez (ninth), Kelly Walker (11th) and Jessica Newton (12th) joining White.
