The No. 4 University of Florida women's tennis team (7-0, 4-0 SEC) opened a three-match homestand with a 7-0 win over No. 19 Wake Forest (6-6, 1-0 ACC) on a breezy Monday evening at the Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
"It was the best match we've played as a team all year," UF Head Coach Andy Brandi said. "We played solid - in other words, we made our opponent work hard and there were very few free points anywhere in singles or doubles."
Gator sophomore Julia Scaringe claimed the first singles win for Florida, defeating WFU's Aimee Smith 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. The next Gator win came at the No. 4 position, as Lindsay Dawaf handed Jackie Houston a 6-1, 6-4 loss. It was a race to see which Gator would post the clinching win Monday, with junior Jessica Lenhoff claiming a 6-4, 6-3 win over WFU's No. 2 player Janet Bergman just moments before Annika Bengtsson finished her 7-5, 6-1 victory over Elizabeth Proctor at the No. 6 spot. Senior Stephanie Hazlett stormed back after dropping the opening set to post a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Maren Haus at the No. 3 position. Florida senior Whitney Laiho claimed the final win of the day, defeating third-ranked Bea Bielik 7-6 (0), 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Florida took the doubles point after sweeping the three matches. Bengtsson and Dawaf posted the first win of the day, defeating Haus and Proctor 8-0. Laiho and Lehnhoff claimed the second win, handing WFU's No. 1 duo of Smith and Bergman an 8-3 loss. Scaringe and Hazlett finished off the Gator doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Bielik and Houston at the No. 2 position.
The Gators return to action on Tuesday, March 13 when they play host to No. 16 North Carolina. Match time is set for 5 p.m. at the Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
