The third-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team kept its perfect SEC record intact with today's 4-2 victory over Mississippi State. The Gators are 10-0 in conference action, while boasting an 18-1 overall record. The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in league play.
Florida has just one regular season dual match remaining, battling sixth-ranked Vanderbilt on Wednesday in Starkville, Miss. The match was originally scheduled to be played earlier during the season but was rescheduled because of rain.
The Gators suited up just five players for Sunday's battle against Mississippi State. The teams only played singles, where Florida was able to secure the victory. The Gators defaulted the No. 6 position as junior Jessica Lehnhoff sat out the match.
Whitney Laiho, Lindsay Dawaf, Julia Scaringe and Annika Bengtsson all won their respective singles matches to place Florida in position to clinch its 18th SEC title.
The Gators are the only SEC team undefeated in league play entering Wednesday's regular season finale against Vanderbilt, which is 20-2 overall and 9-1 in SEC matches. Tennessee also is 10-1 after concluding its regular season. Wednesday's match will determine the SEC regular season champion and the SEC Tournament seeds Nos. 1, 2 and 3.
Mississippi and Auburn meet on Monday in the only other regular season match to be played prior to the SEC Tournament, which begins Thursday, April 19 in Starkville, Miss.
The SEC Tournament seeds 1, 2 & 3 are contingent on Florida versus Vanderbilt on Wednesday. If Florida wins, the Gators are the No. 1 seed, Tennessee is No. 2 and Vanderbilt is No. 3. If Vanderbilt wins, there will be a three-way tie for first place. Since all of the teams' losses were to each other, the SEC tiebreak rules state that the placement of the seeds will be reflective of the ITA Rankings, which will be released on Wednesday.
