Men's Tennis Loses to Alabama, 4-2
Wednesday, April 4, 2001 | Men's Tennis
The No. 29 Florida men's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 22 Alabama on Wednesday afternoon at UF's Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The loss drops UF to 9-11 on the year, 3-4 in SEC play while the Crimson Tide now stands at 15-5 overall and 3-4 in conference action. The teams played singles first in the interest of time due to UA's travel schedule and doubles play was not needed.
"I've felt like we've been making progress and taking steps forward but unfortunately I feel that today was a step backwards," UF head coach Ian Duvenhage said. "Even though we lost the match to LSU (4-3, March 30) I thought all six guys played how they're capable of playing. In places today we did a really great job (but in others we didn't)."
The Tide rolled out to a 2-0 lead after quick wins at the ends of the line up. Maxim Belski, ranked 50th in the nation, needed just 1:13 to knock off 47th ranked Jeremy Wurtzman 6-3, 6-2, finishing the match with a deft lob over Wurtzman's head. Christian Brodersen was tied 5-5 with UF's Trey Johnson at No. 6 in the first set but broke serve and cruised from there en route to a 7-5, 6-1 win.
Florida got on the board when Olivier Levant sealed his 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Susheel Narla with an ace. UA went up 3-1 when Stephen Mitchell defeated Matt Behrmann 7-6 (4), 6-3 with Mitchell also winning match point on an ace. UF cut the deficit to 3-2 when West Nott battled through a tough second set to win 6-3, 7-6 (3) over Chris McRae at No. 5.
Chris Gostek clinched UA's win at No. 3 with a victory over Troy Hahn. The Gator sophomore won the first set 6-2 and led the second 4-1 and 5-2 but was broken twice and lost the set 7-5. Gostek claimed his 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory when Hahn put Gostek's second match point into the net.
Florida will return to action this weekend with a tour of the Magnolia State. UF will face Mississippi State in Starkville on April 6 and then the Ole Miss Rebels on April 8 in Oxford.
