Senior Stephanie Hazlett won the clinching match as the No. 3 Florida women's tennis team swept No. 32 Miami, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at UF's Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators improve to 15-1 with the win while Miami falls to 13-7.
"We did a much better job today of capitalizing on our leads and seizing moments," UF head coach Andy Brandi said. "We're making things work to our advantage."
UF swept doubles play to open the match with the first point. Whitney Laiho and Jessica Lehnhoff needed two match points but not much else in their 27-minute, 8-0, win at No. 1. Lindsay Dawaf and Annika Bengtsson also took two match points to seal their 8-2 win at No. 3 which clinched the point. Julia Scaringe and Stephanie Hazlett wrapped up the doubles play with a 8-4 win for Florida.
Florida did not drop a set in singles play, cruising to a 6-0 sweep. The three even-numbered matches were off the courts first, led by Bengtsson who needed just 42 minutes to post her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. Lehnhoff closed out her 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 in an hour flat, capturing match point on a quick adjustment and drop shot return of a shot by Katia Bogomolova that had hit the net tape. Hazlett won the clincher, 6-3, 6-4 over Siehem Bennacer at No. 4. After a short baseline rally, Bennacer sent a return shot into the net to seal the UF win. Lindsay Dawaf won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 to put UF up 5-0 and Julia Scaringe and Whitney Laiho won seconds apart to conclude play.
The Gators return to action on Sunday, April 8 with a critical showdown that could possibly decide the SEC regular season championship. The league's only two undefeated teams in conference play will square off in Gainesville when No. 3 Florida hosts No. 4 Georgia at noon.
