Men's Tennis Falls, 6-1, at #11 Ole Miss
Sunday, April 8, 2001 | Men's Tennis
Matt Behrmann was the No. 29 Florida men's tennis team's lone winner today as the Gators fell, 6-1, to No. 11 Ole Miss at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford. The loss drops UF to 9-13 on the year, 3-6 in SEC play as the Gators continue to have trouble in Oxford where they have not won since 1993.
"I think the effort was good," UF head coach Ian Duvenhage said. "We just need to get healthy and keep believing in ourselves."
Ole Miss claimed the doubles point to open play. Ole Miss posted a 8-3 win at No. 3 and actually trailed Florida at both No. 1 and No. 2 when the Gators' No. 1 team was defaulted by a match official, handing the doubles point to the Rebels.
The point was moot however as Ole Miss took five of the six singles matches to win the contest. Two Gators defaulted their matches due to injuries, a problem that has plagued Florida all season. Nathan Overholser, playing his first singles match since March 10 due to back and elbow woes, could not complete it, falling 6-3, 2-0 to Kristofer Stahlberg at No. 1. Troy Hahn also retired later for Florida, withdrawing from his match with a hurt achilles while trailing 7-5, 2-1. The Rebels went up 3-0 when 10th ranked Alex Hartman won a second set tiebreaker to beat freshman Jeremy Wurtzman, 6-1, 7-6 (4) at No. 2. Behrmann's 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 for Florida over Paul Ciorascu made it a 3-1 contest. James Shortall's 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Olivier Levant was the clincher though for Ole Miss. Hahn's injury and a win at No. 6 by Patrick Chucri accounted for the 6-1 final.
The Gators return to Gainesville for their final home match of the year on Friday, April 13 when UF hosts No. 4 Georgia at 4:00 pm.
