SEC Track Championships Open With Multi-Events

The University of Florida track and field teams are in Columbia, S.C., this weekend for the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships. Today's action consisted of the first five events of the decathlon and the first four events of the heptathlon. Florida has one athlete entered in each event.
Will Mizell is competing in the decathlon for the men's team and is currently in seventh place with a total of 3,590 points. LSU's Claston Bernard, the top seed of the championships and the national leader is in first place with a total of 4,271 points. Mizell is competing in his third decathlon of the season. At the Sea Ray Relays on April 13-14, Mizell scored a career high 7,051 points.
For the women's team, Erin Stern is currently in 10th place. Her total of 2,635 points has her on pace to set a new career high. At the Florida Relays, Stern competed in her first career heptathlon where she scored a total of 4,171 points. After one day of this weekend's event, Gigi Miller of Arkansas has the lead with 3,508 points.
The championship meet continues tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the men's hammer throw. Running events get started at 7 p.m. The final events of the decathlon start at 3:30 while the remaining events of the heptathlon begin at 4 p.m. The men's team is looking for its first SEC outdoor title since 1987 and the women's team is looking for its first crown since winning the second of back-to-back titles in 1998.
