Women's Doubles Team Reaches NCAA Semifinals
Thursday, May 24, 2001 | Women's Tennis
The Florida doubles team of senior Whitney Laiho and junior Jessica Lehnhoff advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship after Thursday afternoon's 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wake Forest's Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik.
The Gator tandem play top-seeded Lauren Barnikow and Lauren Kalvaria from Stanford on Friday following the singles semifinal matches, which begin at 10 a.m. at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
"We played okay today, not great, but we were able to do enough to get the win," Laiho said. "We could tell that Bea (Bielik) was really tired from her singles match and she showed that by not moving for everything. I think we were a little flat, but overall we played pretty good."
"We're still very tired because this is such a long tournament, but we only have two more days, hopefully," Lehnhoff said. "We'll just try and get as much rest as we can before tomorrow."
Laiho and Lehnhoff enter tomorrow's NCAA semifinal match with a 32-1 record this season and a 43-6 career record playing together. Their lone loss this year was an 8-4 pro-set defeat to Barnikow and Kalvaria on May 20 in the NCAA Team Semifinal match. The Stanford duo brings a 41-4 record into the match.
This is the first time a Gator doubles team has advanced to the semifinals since 1998, when the duo of Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas reached the finals. Overall, this is the 11th time a Florida team has played in the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships, where Gator teams own an 8-2 record.
