The University of Florida men's tennis team opened its 2001-02 season under new head coach Andy Jackson with a perfect first day of play at the 2001 Southern Collegiate Championships held in Athens, Ga. The Gators combined for an 8-0 singles record and a 3-0 mark in doubles action at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The four-day individual tournament continues on Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
"Every Gator advanced and that's what we expected," UF assistant coach Michael Hegarty said. "It was a solid day. It's great to have an unblemished record for the first day of play. If we can do this again tomorrow, we'll be in great shape."
In the 64-player Division I Singles draw, UF's No. 7-seeded Olivier Levant, No. 12-seeded Hamid Mirzadeh and Eleazar Magallan all won their respective first round matches. In Division III action, Gators Ryan Sherry and Matt Behrmann both won in convincing fashion to open the tournament. Trey Johnson, who is the defending Division IV champion, won two matches today to advanced to the Round of 16, as did teammate Chris McDonald.
The Gators were equally successful in doubles action, as No. 2-seeded Levant and Magallon paired in the Division A draw to post an 8-4 victory, joining No. 3-seeded teammates McDonald and Mirzadeh in the second round. Behrmann and Sherry teamed in the Division B competition and posted a 9-7 first round victory to advance.
