Men's Tennis Player Advances to Final

Johnson defeated Ruben Zrihen of UAB, 6-1, 6-0 in this morning’s quarters and Joel Scalzi of Troy State, 6-1, 6-1 in this afternoon’s semis to advance to the final. He will meet Michael Maddox of Tennessee in Monday’s 9:30 am final. Johnson has scorched his way through the field, dropping just one out of 11 sets and winning nine of his 11 sets by either a 6-0 or 6-1 score.
Each of the other four Gators still in the singles draws were defeated today. In Division I, Eleazar Magallan fell to second-seeded Romain Ambert of Mississippi State, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarters. In Division III, Scott Schnugg of Georgia Tech defeated UF freshman Ryan Sherry 6-3, 3-6, 6- 4 in a tight quarterfinal while Gator Matt Behrmann fell, 7-5, 6-2 to John Hangstefer of UT-Chattanooga in his quarterfinal. In other Division IV play, Johen Westin of Central Florida beat Chris McDonald 6-3, 6-2.
Both of Florida’s remaining doubles team won their quarterfinal matches, 8- 3, this afternoon before losing in tiebreakers in the semifinal round of their respective draws. McDonald and Hamid Mirzadeh defeated Baudet and Fowler of South Alabama, 8-3 before falling 9-8 (3) to Antelo and Wetzel of South Florida in the Division I semis. In Division II play, Behrmann and Sherry beat Campos and Menano of Georgia Tech, 8-3 before dropping a 9- 8 (5) decision to Dietrich and Rea of Tennessee.
“Our weaknesses were shown to us today,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “Overall this tournament has been very productive. We found out where we stand and what we need to do a lot of work on.”
