Gator Men's Tennis Player Wins Tournament
Monday, September 24, 2001 | Men's Tennis
“Trey played solid and controlled the whole match just like he has the whole tournament,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “He was the best player in his division and he deserved to win. Now I’m looking forward to seeing how our team stacks up head-to-head against top 25 competition this weekend with the Gator Invitational.”
Johnson posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Michael Maddox of Tennessee this morning to capture the title and cap a strong run through the Division IV field. Johnson dropped just one out of 13 sets played (to Jeff Scarella of Florida State in the second round) and won nine of those 13 sets by a score of either 6-0 or 6-1.
The Gators will make their lone home appearance of the fall this weekend as the team hosts Auburn, Miami and South Florida in the Gator Invitational. The teams will face off in dual-match style contests but the event will be solely scored on an individual level and not as team wins and losses. The event will be held at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex and no admission will be charged. On Friday, Auburn faces Miami at 9 am, followed by the Gators and South Florida at 3 pm. Saturday sees a pair of 9 am tilts pitting Florida against Auburn and Miami against USF. On Sunday, Florida faces Miami and Auburn plays USF with both matches scheduled for 9 am.
