Men's Golf Moves into Second Place

In a move similar to the 2001 NCAA Championships, the Gators have leaped from a double-digit place to second after the second round at the Ping/Golfweek Preview hosted by Ohio State Saturday, Sept. 29. The Gators were tied for 10th after round one, and now one Gator holds the top spot.
Playing in his first-ever tournament for UF, junior Ari Savolainen (Helsinki, Finland) set a Scarlet Course (championship tees) record Saturday with a 5-under par 66. He is the tournament leader with a score of 71-66=137. Savolainen is two strokes over the nearest opponents Brendon De Jonge, Virginia Tech and Brent Wanner, Wake Forest.
Moving up from T21 after round one, junior Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla.) holds at a tie for 10th place. Dickerson added a 70 to his score of 73 yesterday. Also moving into the top-25, senior Camilo Benedetti (Mendellin, Colombia) is at T22. Benedetti shot a 69 in round two, erasing the T55 spot he held in round one.
Sophomore Camilo Villegas (Mendellin, Colombia) dropped 10 spots to 28th after shooting 72 for a 5-over 147 total. Topping the lineup for the Gators, junior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) sits at a T73, shooting 77-81=158.
The Gators, the defending national champions finished the day two strokes behind Clemson. The Tigers lead the tournament with a two-day total of 571 (288-283).
The 54-hole tournament concludes Sunday with tee times beginning at 8 p.m. The nation's top teams were invited to play in the tournament based in the team's finish in the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship tournament.
