UF W-Tennis Freshman Wins First Tournament
Sunday, September 30, 2001 | Women's Tennis
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – University of Florida freshman Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) captured the adidas Women’s Tennis Invitational Flight B singles title played at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens.
The event was the first collegiate tournament for Gordon, who defeated Tennessee’s Crystal Cleveland in a three-set decision in Sunday’s final.
“I’m really happy with the strides Alexis has made over the past couple of weeks,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We tinkered with her game a little and she has responded beautifully.”
UF sophomore Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) also was in action today, upsetting Arizona State’s Adria Engel in a three-setter. Engel is ranked No. 3 in the nation, while Dawaf entered the match ranked 22nd.
“This was a good win for Lindsay,” Thornqvist said. “Like Alexis, she had to come from behind to win. We’ve been competing in 105-degree temperature all weekend and we had the stamina and the will to fight back and win.
“Overall, I’m very happy with our play this weekend. It was a very good showing for our first tournament of the year.”
The Gators return to action next weekend, traveling to Tallahassee for the FSU Lady Seminole Classic. Representing UF will be Gordon, in addition to junior Julia Scaringe and sophomore Annika Bengtsson.
